Sun mantras for Saturn Afflicting Health or Finances

Freedom Cole teaches that when natal Saturn afflicts the ascendant there are health problems related to vāta doṣa throughout the native’s life. They will often deal with large amounts of negativity determined by Saturn either placed in the ascendant, aspecting it by his third house hammer or his tenth house kick. Saturn’s association with the ascendant will also bring more of the tamas guṇa into the person’s life, making them lazy, or sullen, or other tamas attributes. In the Utkalya tradition, the remedy for this is worship of the Sun. The Atharvaveda (12.6.8) says that sūrya ānandaṁ janayan–  the Sun produces joy. One should also include Āyurvedic remedies such as aśvagandhā for health related issues from Saturn.

|| auṁ ghṛṇiḥ sūryāya namaḥ || (8 syllables)

(Auṁ, praises to the Sun, shine brilliantly)

When Saturn is afflicting the ascendant and it is the finances that are suffering instead of health, then there is a variation of the above mantra called the “disease and poverty destroying Ravi mantra” or Roga-dāridra-nāśanam ravi mantra. This is found in Mahīdhara’s Mantra Mahodadhiḥ, Taraṅga 15, verse 1-3.

|| Auṁ hrīṁ ghṛṇiḥ sūrya-ādityaḥ shrīṁ || (10 syllables)

(Auṁ, [goddess power], abundant Sun shine brilliantly, [prosperity power])

Visualization (Dhyāna)

When chanting these mantras, the Sun is to be visualized in an anthropomorphic form (as a human). This is done to create a deeper emotional relationship with the Sun which is not possible with an inanimate object. For this mantra, the Sun is visualized with three eyes, his skin the color of red coral, holding lotuses in his hands, with golden armlets, bracelets, necklaces and shining gold earings. [more details can be seen in Mantra Mahodadhiḥ, Taraṅga 15].

After this empowerment of the mantra into the body, Freedom teaches the visualization of the Sun to be done with full concentration seeing the pink lotus at eye level with the Sun god above. Feel a deep connection with the Sun and the healing radiant light energy bathing over and through the body and mind. Then begin the repetition of the mantra keeping the visualization.
